Definition of a Disaster

Incidents or events that meet one of the following criteria:

• Seriously overtaxes or threatens to overtax the routine

capabilities of a Healthcare Facility or department within the

facility.

• Presents a real or potential danger to hospital employees,

patients or visitors

• Seriously disrupts the normal operations of the hospital

Types of Disasters

External Disasters:

Incidents/events that meet the definition of Disaster,

and which occur anywhere outside the facility but do not

damage it nor threaten personnel.

Examples include: airplane crashes, earthquakes,

industrial accident, civil disturbances.

Internal Disasters:

Incidents/events that meet the definition of disaster, and

which occur inside the facility and threaten to, or cause

internal injury or damage to the hospital, patients and staff.

Examples include: fire, water or power shortages,

explosions and bomb threats.
